about

Sein is the debut collaborative effort between Italian composer and improviser Demetrio Cecchitelli, and American sound artist Nicholas Maloney, aka Blanket Swimming. Sein (German for “To Be”) began as a series of contemplative, minimal tape sketches that were then transferred back and forth between the artists as new layers of instrumental improvisation, field recording, and spontaneous object recordings were added to create a textured, ever-changing space.

To live and exist is a continual, spontaneous act. Sein adds to this dialogue of what it means to compose in the moment, to listen, and to create fluid symbolism through sound. Though separated by the distance of an ocean, the two performers were able to communicate via this spontaneously arising symbolism to weave a narrative, imaginative and dreamlike, yet concrete and lucid. When this auditory/fleeting sensory space is experienced, the meaning of Sein begins to appear quite literally.
